By Barb Van Atta The Broome County Arts Council’s Heart of the Arts awards returned today (Sept. 4) with tributes to four members of the local cultural community. Honorees were announced at a 10:30 a.m. press conference at the BCAC offices in downtown Binghamton, hosted by arts council executive director Sharon Ball and BCAC board president Jim Rollo.  They are:

The Broome County Arts Council, located at 81 State Street, Suite 501, Stephens Square Bldg., Binghamton, will hold a news conference at 10:30am Thursday, September 4th to introduce the winners of  its Heart of the Arts Awards, the Lifetime Achievement Award and, new this year, the Frederick R. Broome County Arts Council is accepting candidate nominations from the public for 2014 Heart of the Arts and Lifetime Achievement Awards.

The awards, nominated by the community and selected by votes of more than 100 BCAC members and the Board of Directors, honor individuals who have made significant contributions to and impact on the arts in Broome County. Painter Ted Whipple,  winner of a 2004 Heart of the Arts Award and resident of Elizabeth Church Manor, celebrated his 100th birthday on June 14 with a party organized by his family.   In honor of his birthday, Ted and his family donated his 1971 painting of the windmill at Ericeira, Portugal to Elizabeth Church Manor.  Ted said that windmills had been one of his favorite painting subjects because they are so distinctive.  He credits his longevity to two decades of eating a bowl...
