“Still Life Theme and Variation – The School of Paris”
Aksel Sand Pedersen
The Broome County Arts Council presents the works of Aksel Sand Pedersen.
Artist, art educator and art historian, Aksel Sand Pedersen has spent the greater part of his life in the arts. His Danish grandfather, Carl Sand, was an artist in Copenhagen and several of his local landscape city paintings adorned the walls of the family dwelling in Brooklyn.
Aksel Pedersen has had over 80 one man exhibits of his art work at various venues, including museums, galleries, regional art centers, libraries and public spaces. In 2009 he suffered a debilitating stroke which damaged his right side disenabling him from continuing his painting. Then a miracle happened. While in therapy at the hospital there was a therapist working with him who was of Italian descent. She had a long neck and her hair was tied up in a bun in the back of her head. Mr. Pedersen was instantly reminded of those magnificent Renaissance profile portraits of women. Encouraged to try using his left hand to draw and inspired by the look of the therapist, he made a drawing of her which had an “excellent likeness and a sensitive rendering of line and shading”. He was, needless to say, “euphorically ecstatic for it meant I could conceivably continue my work and development for which I am eternally grateful and thankful to the powers that be.”
