We made the trek to Six on the Square in Oxford to hear Kevin McKrell and his new band, “Train of Fools.” The band includes Kate McKrell on bodhran and Brian Melick on percussion. I’m sorry to say I didn’t catch the name of the guy on guitar; his playing and singing were worth remembering. That last can be said of the whole band, of course. Many of the songs were written by either Kevin or Kate, his daughter. By turns rousing, poignant and funny, their musical style is a contemporary blend of folk and country, at times with Latin beats (“SAMBA!!!”) and the soft side of rock and always with at least a touch of Celtic feel.

We’re looking forward to hearing them again on Sept. 18 at the Irish 2000 Music and Arts Festival in Ballston Spa, N.Y.
