We attended John Covelli and Friends concert at the Schorr Family Firehouse Stage, titled “From Toccata to Toccanta.” What an outstanding afternoon of music by the gifted Covelli and his fellow musicians, Jeanne Sperber, Hakan Hromek, Stephen Nanni and John Isenberg. Probably the only time anyone in this neck of the woods (or anywhere else) will hear a fantastic piece — Henry Cowell’s “Toccanta for Soprano, Flute, Cello and Piano.” Nanni sang the soprano part in his counter-tenor range — just an amazing piece of music. At the conclusion of a concert that featured Covelli playing Beethoven, Werle, Schumann, Debussy and Respighi, he and Isenberg agreed to share the piano and just burned up the keyboard with their four-hand rendition of Rimsky-Korsakoff’s “Capriccio Espagnole!” Covelli’s explanations of the music are both informative and very funny! The 150-seat hall was sold out and justifiably so!
