Reviewed by Tony Villecco Writing a short story can be challenging; writing a research paper can be daunting. But to actually compose a full-scale musical must be something akin to sitting in the dentist's chair and waiting for the Novocain to kick in. Where to start? How to revise? Months of painstaking workmanship finally giving way to relief and, hopefully, a contented author. (more…)...

Reviewed by Tony Villecco On Tuesday (Feb. 1), Binghamton University’s Anderson Center presented the Five Irish Tenors to what appeared to be a capacity audience. Singing everything from traditional Irish balladry to pop and light rock, the five men proved they were not only gifted but fun to watch, often interjecting bits of humor and comradery. The concert featured both ensemble and solo work by David Martin, Morgan Crowley, Ciarán Kelly, Alan Leech and George Hutton, supported by two very gifted pianists, Conor Linehan, also the music director and arranger, and Cathal...

Reviewed by Tony Villecco Tri-Cities Opera has offered up a delicious concoction in the popular opera based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale Hansel and Gretel. Engelbert Humperdinck's opera has been enchanting adults and children alike since 1893, and TCO's production, which opened Friday (Nov. 11) did not disappoint. A small chamber orchestra led by conductor Vlad Iftinca plied out the score with accuracy and a spirited flow that kept the action moving on the stage of the Opera Center's Savoca Hibbitt Hall. The story of two misbehaving children...

Reviewed by Tony Villecco For the past 34 years, Binghamton University alumni Bill T. Jones has been bringing his innovative and thought-provoking choreography to the forefront of modern American dance movement. Performances by the professional company developed by Jones and his fellow choreographer, the late Arnie Zane, leave one to ponder in amazement at the human body used as an instrument to propel, not only movement, but an emotional depth sometimes underplayed in the dance world today. On Saturday night (Sept. 24) in Binghamton University’s Anderson Center, members of the Bill T....

Reviewed by Tony Villecco The Cayuga Vocal Ensemble, a mainstay in the Ithaca area, celebrated 40 years of quality a cappella choral singing last Sunday (Dec. 6) in Ithaca’s First Presbyterian Church. In a concert both varied and holiday oriented, director Carl Johengen and his group of 20 singers spelled out lovely and beautifully blended tonality in selections from Byrd to Bruckner. William Byrd’s reflective and haunting Mass for Four Voices is an overlooked that was brought vividly to life by these ensemble singers, some of who hail from...

Reviewed by Tony Villecco Peter Ilitsch Tchaikovsky’s one-act opera, Iolanta, proved a sure-fire hit at its Binghamton premiere Thursday evening (Nov. 12) at the newly named Savoca Hibbitt Hall at the Tri-Cities Opera Center in Binghamton. Once again becoming a staple in regional houses, Iolanta was featured at the Metropolitan Opera for the first time earlier this year. As expected, the moving score did not let up for a minute, no doubt reflecting, in part, some of Tchaikovsky’s own deeply personal pain and his exuberance, as well. Originally intended...

Reviewed by Tony Villecco The Summer Savoyards' has successfully mounted a fun, colorful and energetic production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s perennial favorite operetta, The Mikado. Friday’s house (July 17) at Binghamton University was quite full with an appreciative audience who kept up with the unique British humor sprinkled with modern-day references. After a clean, if somewhat literal, interpretation of the overture, the fine orchestra kept a brisk pace throughout under the direction of Kimberly Bemis Tyler. This particular group of musicians played very well with only an occasional disconnect...
