Open Call: Contemporary Landscapes

An Opportunity for Artists

Submissions due by Friday, February 9, 2018

Since the time of the Hudson River School painters, the field of landscape painting has changed just as much as our physical and conceptual landscape has changed. The Roxbury Arts Group invites artists to explore these new landscapes and submit work for their current Open Call, Contemporary Landscapes, an exhibit which opens in the Walt Meade Gallery of the Roxbury Arts Center on March 10 and will remain on view through April 14, 2018. The deadline for submissions is Friday, February 9, 2018. For more information visit or email Annie Schwed, Gallery Coordinator, at

This new exhibition, Contemporary Landscapes, is devoted to finding work that explores interpretations of landscapes that are inventive, thought-provoking and display expertise in both skill and execution of their concept. Submitted landscapes may be traditional, but artists are encouraged to reach beyond and explore the ideas of conceptual landscapes, cultural landscapes, fabricated landscapes, cityscapes, etc.

“People often enjoy viewing the beauty of landscapes paintings, but are rarely surprised by the subject,” says Annie Schwed, Gallery Coordinator at the Roxbury Arts Group. “With this exhibit, we challenge artists and gallery visitors to expand their ideas about landscape.”

Contemporary Landscapes Open Call submissions for consideration can be made by obtaining a submission form from the Roxbury Arts Group website,, and emailing a completed copy to Annie Schwed, Gallery Coordinator, at Each artist may submit up to three works. The deadline for Contemporary Landscapes submissions is Friday, February 9, 2018. There is no fee to submit work for consideration.
